DIY Inductive Pickup Revised..

Posted by superchargedcamira on July 24, 2006

It seems we may have fluked the DIY inductive pickup method mentioned last month. Reason being – we dismantled the original cable we had made (using 3 alligator clips!) in order to make a deluxe version with a hinge on the copper piping so it was all nice and easy to swap and attach onto various cars. After making the new deluxe version we found it stopped working. Regardless what resistors we used, we couldnt get a clear signal of the spark for the Home Dyno software to read. We tried no resistors, different types of resistors, different length copper piping, microphone boosting, etc.. We tried adjustable pot resistors and connected it to an oscilloscope to try and reproduce the signal as close to the original effort but it was to no avail. See the attached wav snippet of the original attempts. Notice the large spikes and low noise from the other sparks per revolution.

The next attempt we tried an old inductive pickup from an old timing light but the ferrite rod had cracked and this was only marginally better with some success but no consistency. Long story short, we bit the bullet and purchased a new inductive pickup ($40AU) for a timing light and connected the relevant step down resistors. A brief run was done and it looked to be working fine again but we wont know until the weekend to try it out numerous times.

The big question is though, how on earth we got it working in the first place with the dodgy cable we had made out of alligator clips?!

ROM Burning 101..

Posted by superchargedcamira on July 23, 2006

After waiting weeks for these damn eBay EPROM chips from South Australia, we finally got them. This meant we could get started converting the Delco to a ZIF socket for easy “in and out” of test chips. We employed our resident electrical engineering expert (The Greg) for removal of the original soldered chip and the soldering of the new ZIF socket. See the pictures below. We also “tanned” (erased) the 11 chips we got for $12.34. They all turned out good.

Our next step was to burn a AMXY0662.bin onto a chip and give it a go straight off the bat. This bin is widely believed to be toned down due to some Camira owners reporting engine ping. After giving this new chip ago we both agree it made the Camira run like a dog! When I mean dog, I mean it runs completely fine but its for the grandma Camira owners that go for the once a week trip to the shops and back! The original AKFL2168.bin felt very much more responsive and noticely more power. We will dyno both the chips to show exactly what kind of power loss is happening where in the power curve to end the speculation once and for all.

We are now at the stage of getting into the horrible task (or fun depending how you look at it!) of modifying the $5D AMXY binary to get it back to operating like the AKFL plus also modifying the MAP tables for the 2 bar sensor. The reason we cant modifiy the AKFL binary is because the $54 definition file isnt considered public domain. I am investigating the possibility of someone reverse engineering the AKFL binary to construct a $54 definition file so we dont have to start with the AMXY binary ($5D definition) but if we have to then we have to.

We are still alive..

Posted by superchargedcamira on July 12, 2006

We havent updated much recently as we have come to a bit of a short term hault. Our EPROMs we had purchased off eBay have been sent back because the address was screwed! Cheers Aust Post! wankers.. Anyway we have purchased the 2 Bar MAP sensor from a place in Ozzy Park so when we get these EPROMs we can start re-mapping to suit the 2 Bar sensor (without the supercharger attached just yet).

We have also fitted the cold air induction and to both of our surprises, just with this mod alone the car feels much stronger! We drive the same strip in second gear and we are reaching red line much earlier than we normally do (so we arent just “thinking” it has more power!)

Hopefully in a week or two we might actually have some chips to start re-mapping shit! Stay tuned.
